Chapter 1: Friendship
Tsume prowled in the night, his head low and his eyes narrowed, looking tough as he stalked through the tall grass. The sight looked sort of humorous- a wolf stalking through the grass like a wild cat. He got as low to the ground as he could, inching forward, careful not to make a sound. The stag that was only a few paw-steps away from him now, continued to eat the grass, pulling out large pieces and swallowing them whole. The stag was obviously lame- an old animal. It's eyes looked blank and it seemed like it could care less about everything. The creature had no idea that a hungry wolf was behind him, waiting for the right moment to kill. Tsume was about to leap forward at the stag when, suddenly, it's ear went up, it raised its head and then ran away as fast as it could. What the -?Tsume thought, I didn't make a sound. How'd it know to run? He watched it go, hunger in his green eyes. He jumped at a noise that came from behind him.
"Hi ya!" Toboe barked.
"You? It was you that made it leave. It heard you running in the grass and it took off. It's your fault."
"Huh? Oh. I'm sorry, Tsume."
"What do you want anyway?"
"Just wanted to say hi, is all."
"You came here and scared my dinner away just to say hi?" Tsume snarled.
"I said I'm sorry."
"Just go and leave me alone."
"But Tsu-"
"Get the hell out of here!"
"Ok, ok...I'll leave."
"And don't come back either!"
Toboe began to walk away. I can't promise you that, he thought. He turned and bounded away from the angry gray wolf. Toboe wandered around for awhile. He was tracking Kiba and Hige's scent but who soon became distracted and started to follow another scent- a rabbit, hoping he could kill and eat it. But after some more walking, he lost that scent too. He turned around and headed towards where he's last seen Tsume. When he found him, he saw the gray wolf lying in the grass.
"Tsume! I found you!"
Tsume's eyes opened to see the young wolf smiling at down at him. "What now?"
"I can't find Kiba and Hige anywhere."
"So? It's not like I care."
"You do care. I know somewhere in your heart, you care about all of us."
Tsume didn't answer but he just continued to growl and narrow his eyes.
"Let's find them together."
"I don't need anyone."
"Everyone needs a friend, Tsume. What would life be without them?"
"It'd be fine."
"Stop lying about everything!"
"I'm not lying!"
"Yes you are. You know it too. You know you're lying. You're acting like a selfish liar when that's not who you really are."
"Go away, would ya!"
"I won't go away. I want to be your friend. But...but why won't you let me be your friend? That's all I've ever wanted- your friendship."
For a brief moment, Tsume's eyes seemed to soften a little but he soon shook his head and growled angirly, "No. No one can ever be my friend. No one can trust me. No one."
"Why, Tsume?"
"Because."
"Because what?"
Tsume didn't reply. He turned and ran in the oposite direction of Toboe. Toboe ran after him.
"Wait up!"
"I told you to leave me alone!"
"But...then I'd be alone. And I don't like being by myself. I like...to be with friends."
"Well go find the others. You're not my friend."
"That's what you say...but...is that really true? Do you really hate me? Do you really want to be alone?"
"It's...it's not really that I hate you, it's just...it's just..."
"What? What's wrong then?"
"I...just wanna be left alone so...just go away"
"Tsume..."
"Just leave me alone!" The gray wolf snarled and knocked Toboe to the ground. Toboe fell on his back and looked up at him with surprise.
"Tsume...why...why's it so hard for you to say I'm your friend?"
"Because you're not my friend."
"But...but I...I...Tsume, please." He went to his human form and tugged at Tsume's arm.
"Get out of here, d**n it!" Tsume, now in his human form, grabbed the runt's shoulders and pushed him to the side.
"Ow!" Toboe sat up and rubbed his left arm with his right hand, narrowing his eyes in pain and clenching his teeth together. "Ouch..."
"Toboe, I...I'm s-" Tsume turned and ran away into the forest.
Toboe was on the verge of crying. He watched as Tsume took off, going deeper and deeper into the darkness of night until he could no longer see him. The young, sad wolf started to walk away, tears clouding his vision. He sat down and rapped his arms around his legs, shivering in the cold winter night. He looked up as snowflakes began to fall, coloring the ground white. The young wolf then looked down sadly and sighed. He hated being alone. All he wanted was to have friends.
Tsume wandered around until he came to a river. He looked into the water at his reflection and slashed out at it, angirly with his paw, making the water splash and ripple. He slumped to the ground and to his own surprise, began to cry, tears welling up in his eyes. "What wrong with me?" he asked himself. "I am a liar. He was right...right about...everything. I...I'm not really cold-hearted and evil. I just act like that. I'm...just...different. But I...can't show others who I really am. Why? Why do I feel like I always have to act this way. Why can't I say...say 'I'm sorry.' Why's that so hard for me to say? I'm just...a worthless...bitter...stuck-up...nasty-" He paused and looked at himself in the water again. He jumped at his reflection and began to paw, rapidly at the water, growling as he did so. "What is my purpose in this world? What good have I ever done in it? All my life, I've only brought pain and hurt to others. All I've ever done...was betray others. My pack...my pack shouldn't...have trusted me. It was my fault that...so many of them died. But...I didn't really know. I didn't know that...I...I had no idea that-" he cried and looked down. "I'm just...misunderstood. No one...will ever know...what I'm really like. No one." His tears feel into the river, causing it to stir a little bit as each drop hit the water. "And...now I've caused pain and hurt to him. And...it's been so long...since anyone ever wanted to be my friend. But I drove him away from me. I told him to go away. What's wrong with me? To tell the truth, I do want to be his friend...but...but...I'm just afraid that I'll...betray him too. And I want to say sorry but it's just...such a hard word for me to say."
Toboe padded up a large rock and howled a long and mournful howl, sending his sorrowful song to many as his voice swept through the air like the snow that fell from the dark, black sky. Then he went to his human form and yelled as loudly as he could, "Tsume!" He paused and looked around to see if he could see his friend but he could not. "Tsume!"
Tsume heard his voice and looked around. "Toboe!" he called back to him. "This way."
"Tsume! I found you!" Toboe burst out of the trees and over to the gray wolf. "I found you. But...if you don't want me with you...why'd you answer me?"
"But I...do...want to be with you. I want to be your friend."
"You...do? But you said-"
"Forget about what I said before. Everything you said about me was right. I'm...I'm not really like the way I act. That's not who I am- not...not the real me. I do care about you and the others. I was just to...afraid that I'd betray you."
"Betray me? But why would you ever do something like that to me? You're my friend...my best friend."
"You're...my best friend too, Toboe. I'm sorry that I yelled at you and tried to make you go away."
"I forgive you. After all, that's what friends do."
"Thanks, runt...I...mean...Toboe."
"It's ok. You can call me runt...or kid...if you want to. I won't get angry. I guess I am kind of small for my age in wolf years." He smiled, closed his eyes and grinned. "Eh, heh heh heh!" Toboe laughed and put his arms behind his head, trying to look cool and laid-back.
"Toboe...I need you to promise me something."
"What?"
"Promise me you won't tell Kiba and Hige everything I said when we find them, ok? I wouldn't want them...I wouldn't want them to think I've gone soft or anything."
"Got it! You can trust me."
"Thanks."
"Mm hm!"
"C'mon, kid. We'll go find a place to sleep and then, in the morning, we'll find Kiba and Hige."
"All right."
"This way."
"Ok."
The wolves, trudged through the snow, their paws sinking in the white that rose higher and higher on the ground as the snowfall became heavier. Toboe shivered, uncomfortably. The snow melted on his fur, making him even colder. He stopped and sat down, shaking. The young wolf looked up at the sky and he whimpered. "I'm so cold. It's freezing out here."
"It may be freezing but we still have to keep moving."
"But...I...n-need to rest...for a while. It so c-cold."
"d**n it, Toboe. Quit your whinning."
"I'm sorry, Tsume. I guess all I ever do is slow you down."
"I'm...sorry. You don't slow me down," Tsume said and his eyes softened. He seemed to be remembering something.
"Thanks. I'll try to go faster."
Suddenly, seeming to come out of nowhere, a white wolf with black tipped ears, a black tipped tail, and black paws, jumped in front of them and snarled angirly.
"Who are you?" Toboe asked, a worried expression on his face.
"Who are you?" the white wolf replied. The wolf was obviously a she-wolf, for she spoke softy. Though she also spoke calmly, the two could sense cunning in her voice as well.
"No. First you tell us who you are," Tsume growled.
"Only a passing lonner. Now get out of my way."
"A lonner? You should join us. I'm sure you'd be happier having others to talk to," Toboe offered.
"I don't need anybody! I'm fine by myself," the she-wolf growled.
"You may say that but is that really how you feel? Are you really happy being alone? I used to be a lone wolf...and I didn't think I needed anyone either but...after a while...I decided...friends...friends aren't so bad," Tsume said.
"I don't need friends. Friends are worthless. I can survive on my own."
"Fine. If that's really what you want, then go. Get out of our way."
"Idiots!" The she wolf snarled. "You are foolish idiots who no nothing at all. You're not even as smart as a dog." She leaped at Tsume and bit into his side. Tsume swung around and grabbed her leg.
"Stop it! Please...stop...fighting...please..." Toboe cried, closing his eyes and covering his ears to block out the angry wolves' snarling and snapping.
"Toboe," Tsume said as he pushed the she-wolf off of him.
The she-wolf looked over at the frightened Toboe and her hard stare seemed to soften at the sight of the weak pup. "You go comfort your little friend and I'll get outta here," she said, now looking at Tsume. Tsume glanced at her angirly but as he looked into her eyes he felt a shiver up his spine. The she-wolf had haunting green eyes that looked a lot like his own and she had the same angry stare that he used to have when he was back in the city. She was so much like himself. And her fur...she had beautiful white and black fur. He couldn't help feeling like he was drawn to her.
"Wait...s-stay with us," he stuttered, not a hundred percent sure what was the right thing to stay. "It's dangerous for a girl to walk around without a pack these days, you know."
"What? I don't care. I'm not afraid. You're just a sexist jerk! Get out of my way or...I'll...I'll uh..."
"Or you'll what?" Tsume stood in front of her, blocking her way. He looked into her eyes and the she-wolf met his gaze.
"I'll...nevermind. I...I'm not sure why but...I...don't want to hurt you."
"I don't want to hurt you either but if I have to, I will. You can join us if you promise not to turn on us."
"I...I promise."
"C'mon then."
"Where are we going?"
"Paradise."
"Paradise? But I thought it was nothing but a legend. How can we be sure it really exists?"
"I'm not sure but...we can at least hope it's real. And...believe. We have to believe."
"Ok. I'll go to Paradise with you."
"Well, what's your name?"
"I'm Zaren. And you guys?"
"Tsume," Tsume answered.
"Toboe!" Toboe said.
The three wolves journeyed through the blizzard, looking for Kiba and Hige. All three were starving and freezing cold but they were determined and didn't stop to see if they could find anything to eat. They kept going with only one thing on their mind- Paradise.
Toboe looked up at Tsume. I'm so glad Tsume's changed a lot. I always believed he'd start to be nicer. I guess he really wasn't as mean as he acted before. He's just...misunderstood. But what really makes me happy, is that, now I know for sure that I'm his friend and that...we'll always be friends...forever. We'll go to Paradise together as long as we keep believing in it. Paradise is real. It has to be, he thought.
Tsume paused and sniffed the air. He narrowed his eyes and snarled. Then he nodded and started to walk forward. Toboe looked at him.
"What is it, Tsume?" the pup asked.
"It's Kiba."
"We found them?"
"Yeah. This way. C'mon."
"Ok."
They started to run towards their friends' scent. Tsume stopped and looked back to see Zaren just standing there and watching them go.
"C'mon," Tsume called to her. "What? You scared?"
"Scared? Of course not! Why would I be scared?" She ran ahead of Tsume. Tsume turned and ran after her and Toboe. He caught up to them and watched as Toboe happily bounded over to Kiba and Hige.
"We found you!" the runt barked.
